CEDAR CITY — Sometimes Desean Holmes had to focus on what he’d given to the game of football in order to ease the pain of losing another opportunity to play collegiately.

The four-star receiver from Pasadena, California, was committed to USC, signed with San Diego State and seriously was being considered by Michigan before all of those situations evaporated because the turmoil in his home life caused him so much trouble in the classroom.

“My senior year was sort of taken from me,” said Holmes. “I was going in and out of foster care … and then my girlfriend’s mom helped me out, gave me a job with her business. I lived with her so I could get my SAT scores and go to college.”

He said he even gave up the sport for a short time and was resigned to just work, but passing his SATs gave him renewed hope that he could play college football. A few schools showed interest, including Michigan.
